Raw Black Metal is a subgenre of Black Metal featuring a lo-fi, harsh, minimal and noisy sound. The most extreme examples of this style of music are sonic fortresses in which the instruments are barely distinguishable one from another. Lower frequencies are completely removed from guitars, the riffs are often trance-like repetitive and the drums seem muffled.
Many raw black metal bands actively seek to sonically and aesthetically be as minimal and lo-fi as possible as a direct opposition to the cleaner and high-budget Black Metal productions.
The roots of Raw Black Metal are dated back to the 90s, with the most influential artists of the genre usually referred to be Ildjarn, Grausamkeit, Moonblood and bands associated with the French black metal collective Les Légions Noires such as Mütiilation, Vlad Tepes and Belkètre; also the Canadian band Akitsa and the critically acclaimed Atmospheric Black Metal band Paysage d'Hiver are often mentioned as strongly influential for the genre.
Nowadays Raw Black Metal bands try to recreate that type of sonorities while pushing them even further; the earliest Black Cilice’s works (A Corpse a Temple, Summoning the Night) can almost be considered Noise. The recent years have seen a lot of North American Raw Black Metal bands and projects slowly gaining fans recognition while at the same time remaining a niche in the underground like Orgy of Carrion, Lamp of Murmuur, Sanguine Relic and Lampir (♦).
